Instagram vs. Facebook for Interior Designers

Social Media Marketing

With Meta platforms holding the most space in social media (for the moment), there’s a lot of debate about which platform is the best. Although Threads is becoming more popular, the two that most interior designers think of when it comes to marketing are Facebook and Instagram.

I firmly believe in showing up on the social media platforms that best fit your goals (and not spreading yourself too thin by trying to show up on ALL of them), today we’re comparing the two.

Here’s what you need to know about Instagram vs. Facebook as an interior designer:

What’s the Difference Between Instagram and Facebook?

Although they’re both Meta platforms and have a few shared features, Instagram and Facebook have a lot (and I mean a lot) of differences to compare and consider.

From the way people engage to the way you can market your interior design business, here are the main differences between Instagram and Facebook:

The Platforms

Did you know that while Facebook is designed for use on both desktop and mobile, Instagram is designed to put the mobile experience first? Facebook also supports long-form content better than Instagram, along with allowing users (and businesses) to publish links on their feed—something limited to stories and bios on Instagram.

Both feeds are equally filled with ads, with the only difference being in ad placement. As a user, this may be annoying—as a business, this means equal opportunity.

The Demographics

Facebook is the largest social media platform globally and has around 3.065 billion monthly users while Instagram has 2 billion. But Instagram takes the lead when it comes to time spent on the platform at 32.4 minutes vs. Facebook’s 30.9 minutes.

The main differences between the two are the people who use the platforms. For Instagram, there’s a younger demographic with a higher income. Facebook users are older, with a more diverse income range.

The Content

Instagram focuses on visual content—static posts, carousels of images, videos, stories—while Facebook allows all that AND text-only posts. That said, images are presented as a focal point on Instagram vs. a collage on Facebook (which looks amazing as a feature for your latest project).

Do You Need a Strategy for Both Instagram and Facebook?

If your marketing strategy is based on your overall goals, there will be some overlap in your messaging across platforms—including Instagram and Facebook. That doesn’t automatically mean you can copy/paste your Instagram post to Facebook and vice versa.

In the end, they are different platforms. The people who spend their time on each are different, the amount of time spent is different, and there’s even a difference in the device they’re consuming your content on (mobile vs. desktop).

Each platform deserves a different strategy—but you don’t have to show up on every platform.

Is Instagram or Facebook Better for Interior Designers?

Omnipresence is great in theory (where you show up on as many platforms as possible), but it’s not realistic as a small business owner. When you’re debating between Instagram and Facebook to spend your time marketing, there’s not necessarily a “better” option for ALL interior designers.

It depends on who your ideal client is, what your goals are, and where YOU want to spend your time.

In general, I recommend prioritizing Instagram over Facebook; Instagram offers more organic reach and more of a community feel. For our management clients, we repurpose our static Instagram content to Facebook, lightly tweaking the format to work for the platform.
