The battle to increase Instagram reach can feel never-ending. And truthfully, reach can be a fickle (and frustrating) thing. While I might not be able to solve all of your insights-related woes, I can try to help with reach by giving you 4 things I do on my own account and for clients when we see a dip in reach.
It depends on how you’re asking this question. If you’re talking about percentage of your audience reached, I aim for 25% at least. But if you’re combining internal and external reach, I aim for improvements month to month (meaning that insight is in green). However, you have to take into account any outliers in your content (I always warn clients that after a reel goes viral, the next month reach will likely dip as it returns to baseline).
Yes, you can (and should!) use tools like hashtags and SEO to get in front of more people, but taking an active role and putting yourself in front of more people not only boosts your reach, but also helps build even more important connections.
Wondering how to engage? Check out this post that breaks down how to include engagement in your strategy.
Yup, even me who says reels aren’t the end-all-be-all is going to give this tip. Reels are great at increasing visibility, so take advantage of trends that make sense for your business and bring new eyes to your page (that you can then nurture with other content types).
Whether through collab posts, partnerships, live interviews, referral networks – lean on your peers and business friends to bring new audiences to each other’s pages. Not only will these leads be more qualified and demonstrate social proof, but it will also allow you to share the workload of building your audience.
I am an Instagram girlie through and through – but limiting yourself to one platform means putting all of your eggs in one basket. Try out other channels like Pinterest, TikTok and email marketing to share content in a different medium and drive traffic back to Instagram.
I want you to get a bit introspective here. What would happen with more eyes on your page? Is your page optimized to keep those people around? Can your business handle more clients? Or would you be better off focusing on the audience you already have? Big numbers are fun to see – but get clear on why you want them.
But most importantly, remember that reach can fluctuate and ~that doesn’t mean your business is failing or you’re doing something wrong.~ User behavior shifts throughout the year. More + more people use Instagram every day, increasing competition to be seen. What is more important is your efforts month over month, year, over year, and treating Instagram as a portfolio about your business rather than agonizing over the reach of any singular post or short timeframe.
How are you feeling about your reach recently?
And if you want more where that came from…
