We’re a month into the new year, and you may be wondering what 2023 social media trends you should be paying attention to. Whether you’re a social media manager, a business owner juggling marketing on top of What is the social media marketing world going to look like in 2023?
While I don’t have a crystal ball, I can say for sure social media – particularly Instagram – will look at least a little different in the new year.
What are the predictions for social media marketing in 2023?
Every social media marketer and expert you speak to will have a different opinion on this; As I mentioned above, no one has a crystal ball and social media is constantly shifting and evolving.
2023 Social Media Trends: What There Will Be MORE Of
Wondering what is worth putting your time and energy into? These are the three activities and areas of marketing I see taking center stage in 2023:
An emphasis on balance in your content strategy on Instagram
We saw the algorithm swing wildly in favor of reels, and now reach has gone up for photo + carousel posts after a recent announcement from Mosseri that they’d gone too far. Yet there are still people growing by focusing on reels, and others where their best content is still photos. The takeway? No one type of content is going to be the magic bullet for your account. By creating a balanced content strategy that incorporates a variety of content types, you’ll be able to connect with your audience no matter which way they prefer to consume content.
Spreading your eggs across multiple baskets
That is, platforms. This trend was already starting in 2022 and will only continue to grow in popularity, for two reasons. First, utilizing multiple platforms allows you to reach new audiences. Second, having more than one place that you market your business mitigates your risk if something happens to one platform (such as your Instagram getting hacked, or losing access to your Pinterest account).

A focus on SEO
and not just on your website! Instagram and TikTok alike are beefing up their in-app SEO capabilities. One place to focus on searchability is the name field of your bio; check out this guide to an effective Instagram bio for more advice on making the most of this valuable real estate. Pinterest is another platform heavily focused on SEO! Don’t neglect this aspect of your marketing because it’s not as fancy or immediately beneficial – it’s a long-term game.
2023 Social Media Trends: What There Will Be LESS of
A need to jump on every trend
Not all trends work for all businesses, and gone are the days of trending audios being a secret key to exploding your reach. Telling stories will be far more important than jumping from fad to fad.
Marketing based on your follower count
Are you sick of that I grew 100k followers in 90 days content? I certainly am! Instead, I predict you’ll see content focusing on results generated like reach increases, website clicks, and leads.
An expectation for social media to solve all your business’s problems
More and more business owners are realizing that they can’t solely rely on social media to explode their businesses. In order to be successful, all the pieces of their puzzle have to be in place: their messaging, their brand strategy, their pricing and offers, their website, social media, emails… the list goes on and on. Social media is and will continue to be immensely powerful for increasing your brand awareness and building a community (particularly Instagram), but you can’t neglect all the other pieces that make up a successful business.
Other Social Media Trends to Pay Attention to in 2023
As this Later article highlights, UGC will continue to grow in popularity as user attention shifts away from heavily curated influencer marketing. AI-generated content will garner more focus as marketers and business owners experiment, but I still do not believe it will replace the work of a social media expert who can personalize the content to your business. And finally,
What do you hope will change on social media in 2023? What do you wish would stay the same?
